Hello Playbook Fam!

Records are falling. Personal bests are happening every meet. Athletes are peaking at exactly the right time. This is what we have been working toward all season. The early morning practices. The long bus rides. The hours spent training when nobody was watching. It all comes down to this.

This week, we are celebrating track and field - one of the most demanding sports out there, where it is you versus you, the clock, the tape measure, and your own limits.

We are also talking about mental health. Because being a complete athlete means taking care of your mind just as much as your body. And our community is stepping up to support our young people in meaningful ways.

Time to dive in. 🏃

Athletes compete in track and field events, including high jump and running, with mountains in the background.

🏃 TRACK & FIELD: YOU VS YOU

Track and field is not like other sports.
There is no defense to blame. No ref to argue with. No teammate to bail you out when things go wrong. It is just you, the track (or runway, or throwing circle), and your ability to execute when it counts.

Every race. Every throw. Every jump. It all comes down to one question: can you be better today than you were yesterday?

That is what makes track and field so demanding. And that is what makes it so rewarding.

Both Peninsula and Gig Harbor have athletes who are answering that question every single day. They are setting personal records. They are breaking school records, competing at a level that has them ranked among the best in the state, and they are doing it with grit, discipline, and a relentless commitment to getting better.

Time to celebrate what they are doing.

🏃 Gig Harbor High School Track & Field: Coming in Hot 🏃‍♀

GHHS Track & Field Coaching Staff:
  • Head Coach: Kevin Eager
  • Assistant Coaches: Patty Ley, Meagan McCluskey, Kristie Eager, Michael Fischer, Taylor Hacker, Connor Jost, Jeff Lang, Bradley Peloquin, Lydia Ward

The Gig Harbor Tides are coming into the postseason with momentum, and the performances across sprints, distance, and field events have been strong all season.
Sprints & Hurdles:
The Tides are loaded with speed. Both the girls and boys 4x100m relays are currently in the top 8 for the 3A division, and the girls 4x200m relay is ranked first in the state.

Eisley Herring and Karin Heikkila (the first and second legs of the 4x100m relay) are both top 8 in state for the 100m hurdles, and Karin is top 10 in the 300m hurdles.

Two freshman sprinters have been tearing up the track. Addison Sullivan-Glennon, the new third leg on the 4x100m relay, is the fastest freshman in Gig Harbor history with a time of 12.69 seconds - and her time is still dropping. Violet Lester has run a 12.84 in the 100m and 25.85 in the 200m. Both freshmen run on the 4x200m relay that has a legitimate shot at making it to state.
Distance:
Freshman distance standout Maya Crane has been scoring points at multiple invitationals and is in the top 20 for the state in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. She is running close behind school record holder Lejla Carlson, who is also top ranked and college-bound to Boise State after this spring to continue her running career.

For the boys, junior Joshua Minner holds the number one spot on the team in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m. But in the 1600m and 3200m, Gavin McKeegan and Jack Greer have him beat.
Field Events:
Gig Harbor's pole vaulters have been hitting new heights, led by junior Ella Morris for the girls and sophomore Nash Michael for the boys.

High jump has been strong with Asher Finch leading the way, and Azrielle Polling and Violet Lester tied at 4'10".

Long jump has Henry Harding and Matthew Bird in a close battle for first and second, but Bird has Harding beat in the triple jump.
On the throws side, Quinn Wunderlich is holding a distance of 46'4.75" in shot put, Hunter Parris has thrown 129'7" in discus, and Cole Fischer holds javelin at 158'5".

For the girls, freshman duo Reese Morris and Madisen Somers are leading shot put at 22' and 20'10" respectively, and Madisen takes discus at 66'11".

The Tides are heading into the postseason strong and ready to compete. May they set PRs, break records, and leave everything on the track.

🌟 Spotlight: Isabelle Harruff - Junior, SALC Member

Junior Isabelle Harruff is not just competing at a high level - she is making history. Last season, Isabelle anchored the 4x100m relay team to a state title. She also earned a podium finish in the 100m, marking the first time in over 30 years a Gig Harbor female sprinter has placed in that event at state.

Isabelle began her track career in middle school, competing in hurdles, 200m, 400m, and long jump. Although she initially focused on hurdles and jumps, her strengths in sprinting became more evident over time, leading her to shift toward the short sprints and relays.
She competes year-round, including indoor season and summer meets such as Junior Olympics. But for Isabelle, the team environment is what makes it all worth it. "I love my teammates and coaches," she shared. "The support system we have at Gig Harbor is special."

Outside of competition, Isabelle stays involved in the program by serving as a manager for the cross country team and volunteering with middle school athletes. She is also a member of SALC, where she helps lead and connect athletes across the district.

Isabelle is the complete student-athlete - competing, leading, and giving back. We are proud to have her representing Gig Harbor and PSD athletics.

The Peninsula Seahawks are having a season to remember, and the highlight reel keeps getting longer.

Record Breaker: Suri Sardinia
Senior Suri Sardinia has been absolutely dominant in the throwing events, and she has rewritten the record books this spring.

At the Dave Snyder's Lil' Norway Invitational at North Kitsap, Suri broke the school record in discus with a throw of 142'5", beating the previous record of 138'1" set by Michala Zilkey in 2014.

But she was not done.

At the Arnie Young Invitational, Suri set a new school record in shot put with a throw of 40'8.5", took second in shot put, and second in discus. She is competing at an elite level and has established herself as one of the top throwers in the state.
Other Standout Performances:
  • Wyatt Harding took first in the 800m at the Arnie Young Invitational
  • Annie Jensen took third in long jump at the Lil' Norway Invitational
  • Gaib Winslowe took third in long jump at the Arnie Young Invitational
  • Boys 4x100m relay (Xavier Jones, Cuda Ferencik, Trever Bingham, Jake Johnson) took third at the Arnie Young Invitational
  • Leah Schmidt placed 6th in shot put
  • Yahshua Fonoti placed 6th in shot put
  • Trever Bingham placed 6th in triple jump
  • Baxter Balogh placed 7th in the 800m
  • Jacob Johnson placed 8th in the 100m

At the Arnie Young Invitational, the boys placed 17th overall out of 27 teams that scored, and the girls placed 10th out of 28 teams that scored.
Personal Bests Everywhere:
Peninsula athletes are setting personal records left and right. At recent meets, over 40 athletes have posted personal bests across sprints, distance, jumps, and throws.

That is what good coaching, hard work, and a commitment to improvement looks like.

Building the Program:
This year, Peninsula track and field had one of the largest turnouts the program has seen in years, with 152 athletes competing across varsity and JV. That kind of participation reflects a program that is growing, thriving, and creating opportunities for athletes at every level.

The Seahawks are heading into districts with momentum, confidence, and a roster full of athletes who are peaking at exactly the right time.

🥍 PSD Riptides Lacrosse: Conference Champions

A jubilant team in black and teal uniforms celebrates on a green turf field at dusk.
The PSD Riptides finished their regular season with a record of 10-1-1 and as Peninsula Conference Champions!

Led by captains Lizzy Kolokithas, Anya Helgerson, and Maddie Harding, the Riptides are headed to state playoffs next week. This team has competed hard all season, and the results show it. A 10-1-1 record. A conference championship. And a chance to compete for a state title.

The Riptides represent both Peninsula and Gig Harbor, and they have done it with skill, teamwork, and a relentless commitment to competing at the highest level. Good luck at state, Riptides. We are SO proud of you.

A group of athletes huddles together, emphasizing the importance of mental health.
Being a student-athlete is hard! You are balancing school, sports, family, friends, and everything else life throws at you. You are managing practices, games, homework, projects, and the pressure to perform. You are dealing with injuries, losses, setbacks, and the mental grind that comes with competing at a high level.

And sometimes, it is a lot. That is okay, normal, and you are not alone. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Taking care of your mind is part of being a complete athlete. And asking for help when you need it is not a sign of weakness - it is a sign of strength.
Resources Available:
If you are struggling, there are people who want to help. Talk to a coach. Talk to a school counselor. Talk to a trusted adult. Reach out to a teammate or a friend. Peninsula School District has counselors and mental health resources available at every building. You do not have to navigate this alone.

Youth Mental Health Town Halls - Coming This May:
Our community is stepping up to support the mental health and well-being of our young people. Peninsula School District, in partnership with the City of Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula Civic Center, Kids Mental Health Pierce County, and other local organizations, is hosting two Youth Mental Health Town Halls this month.
These are opportunities for parents, caregivers, educators, school staff, youth-serving organizations, and community members to come together, learn about available resources, and have real conversations about how we can better support our young people.

Town Hall Dates:
📍 Key Peninsula Civic Center
  • Thursday, May 7, 6:00 - 8:00 PM
📍 Gig Harbor Civic Center
  • Monday, May 18, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

These conversations matter. Mental health matters. And our community is committed to building a safety net for our young people - together. If you are a parent, educator, coach, or community member who cares about youth well-being, we encourage you to attend.

Go Seahawks! Go Tides!
